Black Collar Sex Crime Round-Up: September 10, 2009

Gregory John Briehl • Charles Carfrey
Ladislao “Constantino” Morales
Wikler Moran-Mora • Steven Steinbrecher
Efrain Umaña, Sr. • William David Webb

Because we could spend 24/7 tracking the sex crimes of right-wing religionists (especially “youth pastors”) and never get caught up. Of the following, the more interesting cases will probably end up with their very own Conservative Babylon entries.

Gregory BriehlSentenced: Gregory John Briehl, 55, pastor, 400-member Peace Lutheran Church (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America), Charlottesville, Virginia, to five years — suspended — plus one year of supervised probation and forfeiture of his home computers, for possession of child pornography. Briehl had entered an “Alford plea” (i.e., “I didn’t do it but I’m still pleading guilty”). As part of the plea deal, the prosecutor dropped 14 other counts. This was not Briehl’s first offense; he had been convicted on two counts of video peeping (”surreptitiously videotaping women undressing in his home”) in 2006. Story: DailyProgress.com, August 27, 2009

Charles CarfreySentenced: Charles Carfrey, 59, pastor of The Lord’s House Church, Buckeye, Arizona, to two years and lifetime probation for sexually assaulting at least three females, two underage, in Buckeye and another in Oregon, whom he was supposed to be “counseling.” (See Fox Phoenix.) “Carfrey’s history of sexual abuse dates to 1988,” notes AZCentral.com, “when he was convicted of second-degree sexual assault in Oregon… The victim was his daughter.” Victims were not pleased with his plea bargain (guilty to two counts of sexual conduct with a minor and one count of failure to register as a sex offender), one of whom stated: “He’s completely ruined my life. I can’t sleep at night. I have panic attacks now. I have nightmares all the time.”

Ladislao 'Constantino' MoralesCharged: Ladislao “Constantino” Morales, 56, pastor, Centro Evangelistico Alfa y Omega Church, North Las Vegas, Nevada, with two counts of lewdness with a minor under 14 years of age and four counts of open and gross lewdness.

Wikler Moran-MoraCharged: Wikler Moran-Mora, 38, pastor, Seventh Day Adventist Church of Reform, Tampa, Florida, with filing a false police report. As an alibi to visit his girlfriend, Moran-Mora texted his wife to tell her he’d been kidnapped. “He later sent several more texts where he claimed that he was negotiating his release, which was when she called the police,” reported WeInterrupt.com (August 26, 2009). His texting led to his capture via a trace of his cell phone. Reports say Moran-Mora admitted he made up the kidnapping story “to spend time with the woman who was in his presence when he was found.”

Steven William SteinbrecherCase sent to grand jury: Steven William Steinbrecher, 38, youth pastor, Jenny’s Creek Gospel Church, Kermit, West Virginia, and school bus driver, arrested in July, 2009, for soliciting a minor via computer. Although the age of consent in West Virginia is 16, and the alleged victim was 17, assistant prosecutor Eugene Cisco cited part of the state penal code which applies to sexual abuse “by a parent guardian, custodian, or a person in a position of trust to a child.” Story: State Journal, July 30, 2009; Williamson Daily News, August 28, 2009

Efrain UmanaCharged: Efrain Umaña, Sr., 54, pastor at various Assemblies of God churches in and around Lincoln, Nebraska, with numerous sex crimes, including raping both a woman and, repeatedly, a young girl. Story: Omaha World-Herald, August 21, 2009; KETV, August 21, 2009

William David WebbSentenced: William David Webb, youth pastor, Word of Life Christian Center (where his father, “Divine Prosperity” proponent William Scott Webb, is senior pastor), Birmingham, Alabama, to 60 months in federal prison for taking an underage girl across state lines for the purpose of having sex, a capital felony. In addition to five years, Webb will pay a token restitution of $450, plus $5,000 worth of counseling for the victim. If he hadn’t copped a plea, Webb could have received up to 30 years and a $250,000 fine. Story, CBS42.com: February 13, 2009; May 5, 2009; July 30, 2009

It seems anyone in the world will attempt to find an excuse to point fingers at a Christian no matter the cost. You need to be careful what you report as factual. Steven William Steinbrecher NEVER solicited sex or even mentioned the word sex in his correspondence with the young lady in question. The state trooper who arrested him even agreed on the witness stand that sex was never mentioned. He told a joke about modeling lingerie (repeated from a movie he had seen in the past) when the young lady was crying over the conversation about having problems with her boyfriend. I haven’t met a male yet who handles a woman crying very well. He had told the exact same joke over bowling amongst a large group of people including the young lady and her boyfriend and ALL parties laughed at the joke. He NEVER hit on her or otherwise. It seems only the folks in Philly “GET” this type of sense of humor. He was being sarcastic. My husband STILL does not get my sarcastic sense of humor. So, I guess I can’t say I’m surprised that the folks down there in WV didn’t get it, I found their sense of humor lacking. He was raised in this sort of environment where joking like that would not have been a problem. There were SO many lies spread around about this case. I truly hope Steve files a huge lawsuit against the state of WV as well as the young lady and her family. His life and career have been destroyed over something he is being accused of which he never did.

Don’t know if it was actually sent, but it NEVER went. His case finally went to the judge last Monday. I don’t know if outsiders can get access to the transcripts from the earlier hearings (the bail hearing) when the trooper was questioned. If you can, I would recommend it. There was no doubt to all parties involved that the authorities screwed up on this. No one was willing to admit that they made huge mistakes with this entire thing. They had egg on their face and they repaired everything to save their own hides the best they could. I still don’t think they want to believe it was a joke int he first place. This whole thing has been like the movie My Cousin Vinnie where the guys were innocent, but they had one heck of a time proving it. I’m not making this up. I know they say in this country we are innocent until proven guilty. Anyone who has had to deal with the legal system is more than aware of this. My family has received quit a lesson thru all of this. It’s usually the guilty who get out of jail and released easily, because they know how to work their way around the system. The innocent folks generally have no clue, and they are usually the ones that are tortured by the authorities. I did my own research before I just assumed for myself that my brother was innocent. There are times when people in these positions hurt the innocent. It disgusts me just as much as it disgusts you.

Steven made 2 mistakes thru this whole thing… one, telling the joke to start with. He’s never been good at telling the jokes. Someone else could tell the joke and have everyone rolling on the floor laughing. Steven could tell the exact same joke and everyone wants to slap him. You would have to listen to him talk yourself and really, really pay attention to realize there was a joke in what he was saying. Those of us who know him the best know this about him, so we know to pay attention closer. Steven’s second mistake was allowing himself to be questioned without a lawyer present. Steve is a very trusting person. In his mind, he had nothing to hide, so he saw no problem being questioned without a lawyer. Believe me he has received quite a tongue lashing from everyone on this side of the fence (including his lawyer) because of this.

The grand jury was held back in September, his case was never reviewed by the grand jury. I hope I don’t come across as attacking, because I’m not. I just feel the need to defend my brother. I know you’re probably thinking… oh just a family member burying their head in the sand. Believe it or not, that is not the case. Steven and I are less than 2 years apart. We have clashed a lot over the years. I would be the first person to jump on the bandwagon if there was even a slight chance of him being guilty. He’s not the easiest person to live with; however, Steven would be the first person to give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. He gave up his life and a chance to make money to go work down in WV at a mission. He has lived in sub-standard conditions the whole time he has been there. He has dealt with abuse from one of his coworkers. WHY? Because he has had a heart to work down there since he was 15 years old. He fell in love with the community down there. He’s a very kind, over-sensitive, yet complicated person. He is a very intense individual. Our family joke has always been if everyone said the sky was blue, Steven would say it was green and beat the arguement with a dead horse driving everyone nuts. In the end, Steven is looking at this much more deeply than most people. Our father is sick with cancer, I can’t be home to help out, so I asked Steve to go home to help… this was before this legal stuff all happened. He was having trouble thinking about going… he felt he wasn’t strong enough to be around our father in that condition on a daily basis. Steve is the one in our family who takes things heart much more quickly. He would NEVER intentionally hurt another human being, because it would break his heart to see someone else hurting. He got into trouble with this, because he was trying to help someone. It backfired. She has a mother who likes to receive attention. She is one of those folks who will constantly have something wrong for the attention. I’ve heard this from other sources not from my brother. She saw an opportunity to get attention. Did you know the transcipts from the young lady’s computer didn’t match what was on Steve’s computer. Steve had no idea he was going to be arrested, and if you know anything about computers you know you can never really delete the stuff from your computer. It’s always there. The police didn’t even take his computer. His own lawyer took it to review it. AND, the whole while Steven was in jail. The young lady NEVER deleted Steve as one of her friends on Myspace. There are SO many little things about this that never added up that the public was never told about.

Unfortunately, I have to run to a doc appt. However, I think I wrote enough for now. I do have a tendency to write “books”. I can type faster than I can think, so it makes for long messages.

Anyway… thanks for listening. Have a good day!
