E. Ozwald Balfour (R-Bad Mormon, Utah)

Ozwald BalfourClaims to fame: Trinidad-born co-founder, Utah Republican Black Assembly; president/CEO, International Media Services, LLC; “international business consultant,” World Trade Connecters [sic]; former radio host, K-TALK & KTKK; ex-cruise ship dancer; devout Mormon; ex-LDS branch president; convicted sexual batterer

Moral apex: In September, 2010, pleaded no contest to three counts of misdemeanor sexual battery. Balfour was accused by three different women of groping their breasts while they were auditioning for his media company in Salt Lake — while another woman (who met Balfour through an ad for Web design classes) said he assaulted her at her home in 2003.

Sentenced in November, 2010, to a measly 90 days in jail, plus psychosexual evaluation — but no registration as a sex offender.

What’s more: There’s an awful lot of talk out there about Balfour scamming potential production assistants for his media company; we can’t confirm or deny any accusations — all we can do is tell you what’s being said; e.g.:

For the majority of the past 12 years Oz has been scamming unsuspecting victims looking for work in the Salt Lake City, Utah Film and Television Industry. …

The person responds to an advertisement on Craig’s List or another popular website…

After you begin work pay is hardly mentioned nor anymore word of a written contract. …

At this point you may be lucky enough to receive part of the pay for services rendered. During the supposed week of pay Oz, nor his Daughter who take care of payroll can be found in the office. …

If you happen to keep working after this point (which most don’t) the excuses will progress to “computer problems” or “I can’t get a hold of my Daughter, and she handles payroll.” The excuses are endless. If you happen to persist (which I don’t think he expects) he may be cornered and ask you to meet him somewhere to receive a check…usually a parking lot of some sort. He promises the whole amount, but writes it for less. This check may or may not clear when you go to deposit in the bank.

If you continue to persist past this point he generally cuts off all contact and avoids you like the plague, unless he is desperate for help at the time. …

In addition to the countless people who have been scammed by the techniques above, I have heard tales of sexual harrassment and sexual advances toward female employees, as well as Social Security Fraud by using former “Employee” or “Independent Contractor” information to receive loans or credit cards for himself or his businesses. I have no proof of these allegations, other than the testimony of friends and co-workers who have experienced said events.

Memorable observations:

There are certainly those black Saints, like Ozwald Balfour, who don’t feel the … pangs of discrimination. …

“Without a doubt, I would say that every good thing that has happened in my life since [converting in 1979] has been a direct result of my membership in this church,” said Balfour…

Balfour has no need for soul-searching wranglings over doctrine or spiritual equality, and he questions those who presume to have more divine knowledge than has been revealed to the prophets.

“Is this really a church that’s built on revelation or isn’t it?” he asks. “If you don’t believe so, then you don’t believe in this revelation or any other. You can’t pick and choose.”

Sen. Butters is despicable and should resign. … Butters is racist and he knows it. …

The delegates of Senate District 10 almost sent him packing at the Salt Lake County Republican Party convention. Ozwald Balfour should have known better when he helped Butters to win by one vote to avoid a primary.

Suggested Bible* reading for Mr. Balfour:

I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long.

For my loins are filled with a loathsome disease: and there is no soundness in my flesh.

— Psalm 38:6-7

* We’d use the Book of Mormon, except for the fact that Mormonism pins the blame for sexual assault on the victim, not the perpetrator.
