“I have filed to divorce my wife. I cannot divorce my daughter.”

— Maricopa County Supervisor Fulton Brock
Dec. 30, 2010

And we thought Christine Shreeve Hubbs was going to be our Mormon Mommy of the Year. (We also thought nothing could shock us anymore. Silly us.)

Quick recap, and then onto the latest and most stunning turns in the Susan Brock Saga: On October 26, 2010, 48-year-old Susan Brock, wife of hardcore right-wing Republican — and devout Mormon — Maricopa County, Arizona, supervisor Fulton Brock, was arrested and accused of having sex some 20 to 30 times over a three-year period with a teenage boy (the son of a family friend), beginning when the boy was 14.

In mid-November, Fulton Brock filed for divorce.

A few days after that, Susan Brock pleaded not guilty to 15 charges of child molestation.

Now for the two-part jaw-dropper, beginning with the arrest of Rachel Brock, Susan Brock’s 21-year-old daughter, for “sexual conduct” with the same boy her mother is accused of molesting. (more…)

Jim Greer, Deborah Cox-Roush, and Now Vern Buchanan: Is There Any Republican Left in Florida Fit to Run the State Party?

Vern BuchananThe Minnesota GOP isn’t the only state party “having trouble filling chairmanships with people who aren’t political embarrassments” — just look at this motley bunch in Florida, all of whom either were or are in the running to head the state Republican Party: Jim Greer’s about to go on trial, Deborah Cox-Roush is scrambling to run damage control in light of her recently-discovered DUI, and now we hear a business partner of, and a company owned by, Vern Buchanan, U.S. House Rep. from Florida’s 13th, have been slapped with an FEC lawsuit. Here we catch up with the Conservative Babylon Class of 2010 — some we covered previously, some Babylonians we missed entirely, but all of whom deserve recognition (read: exposure) as holier-than-thou right-wingers who can’t seem to live up to the impossible “family values” standards they demand of everyone else. (No, we don’t know how many parts there will be to our year-end catch-up.) In no particular order…

Joe ColquittGod, Guns… All We Need to Complete This Story Are Some Gays: No gays here (that we know of), but in January, Joe Colquitt, pastor of St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Alcoa, Tennessee, called his son Michael to meet him at the church so they could discuss Michael’s lack of church attendance. Next thing you know, there’s a police report that says “[Michael] Colquitt stated [Joe] Colquitt pulled out a handgun and stated he would kill him, his wife and family. [Michael] Colquitt stated [his father] was upset because he cussed him.” Guess Joe Colquitt isn’t quite the Bible believer he appears, or he would have killed the kid (“For every one that curseth his father or his mother shall be surely put to death: he hath cursed his father or his mother; his blood shall be upon him.” — Leviticus 20:9). While a hearing was slated for February, the case seems to have dropped off the map. We do know Joe was served with a restraining order. (more…)

Vincent Reda: Better He Should Shoplift A New Wig

Vincent RedaSimple story: Vincent D. Reda, 76-year-old chairman of the Republican Party of Rockland County, New York, was arrested Sunday and charged with shoplifting a pea coat (yes, the New York Daily News says he tried to “take a pea”) from Macy’s in West Nyack. He says it was all a mistake, that he was trying to return the coat. The cops say no, he took the coat from the store, put it in a bag, tried to leave, and set off the security alarm. He says he just got the coat he was trying to return mixed up with one on the rack.

We don’t believe for a minute that Reda would risk arrest shoplifting a coat. Just look at the man: What he needs more than anything is a good toupee.

In any case, Reda is set to appear in court January 12th.

Chuck Phelps: A Story We’ve Been Avoiding All Year Because It Makes Us So Angry

Chuck PhelpsWhat can we say about Chuck Phelps without using many four-letter words? Not much, so we’ll let the story speak for itself.

In 1997, Tina Anderson, a 15-year-old member of Trinity Baptist Church, an Independent Fundamental Baptist (IFB) church, in Concord, New Hampshire, was allegedly raped, twice, by 38-year-old church deacon Ernest Willis. Her pastor, Chuck Phelps, reported the incident to police, but authorities could never move forward with the case because Anderson disappeared; she was sent the Colorado home of a deacon of another IFB church (Tri-City Baptist), where she was homeschooled and restricted in her contact with the outside world. Andy Thomas, Witch-Hunter

Here’s one we missed in 2010, who deserves his very own spotlight.

He was a youth minister at Rossville Church of Christ in Rossville, Illinois, junior high track coach at Rossville-Alvin Grade School, tutor and self-described “minister to the community,” but we’ll always think of Andy Thomas as a witch hunter who went on a crusade to oust Wiccans from his town — until he was charged with sexual assault of a child (meaning: actual, physical sexual assault of a teenage boy), and sexual exploitation (meaning: he allegedly tried to get teenage boys to send him dirty pictures over the Internet by pretending to be a teenage girl — actually, several girls, and boys). Well, that, and that Brown’s pastor was shocked — shocked, he tells you! — by the whole ugly business. And ugly it must have been, considering they held Brown on a steep $1 million bond. (more…)

There’s nothing particularly spectacular about the case of 65-year-old Roman Catholic pedo-priest Michael Lowell Barnes (see Black Collar Sex Crime Round-Up: October 8, 2009), other than the miniscule sentence he received in September — a lousy six months behind bars after entering an Alford plea (i.e., “I’m not pleading guilty, but I know you have enough evidence to convict me”) to one count of child sexual abuse — despite facing 16 original charges of similar crimes that allegedly took place over more than five years. Video: Sandy McGriff Tells Her Side of the Story

Sandy McGriffFirst, a re-cap, posted in yesterday’s Black Collar Crime Round-Up:

Accused: Sandra “Sandy” McGriff, a.k.a. Kathy Robinson, 50, co-pastor with husband Weldon McGriff (brother of the late Larry McGriff, prominent Dallas pastor of the original Church of the Living God), Dallas, Texas, of burglarizing the home of a congregant of “more than $10,000 worth of clothing, purses and electronics.” Police also say she slipped out of two sets of handcuffs, and kicked and scratched officers as they arrested her. One Charles McGriff “said his family’s relationship with Sandra and Weldon McGriff had been strained for months as they had disagreements over how best to lead a church,” and so Weldon and Sandra McGriff (or “Evanglist Sandy Mcgriff,” as she calls herself on Facebook) established their own church, also called Church of the Living God. Baptist Pastor Melvin Brown: Who Would Jesus Beat in the Face and Chase Around with a Gun?

More than a few Conservative Babylonians stand out in our minds as people we’d never want to tick off, judging by their off-the-hook overreactions to incidents the rest of us would forget about five minutes after they happened, among them: Tom Hackbarth, who followed a female acquaintance to a Planned Parenthood parking lot with a pistol strapped to his hip, because she turned him down for a date; Chip Pickering, who, when he’s not (allegedly) messing with somebody else’s woman, is (allegedly) picking fights with his son’s soccer coach; and Cary Allred, who gets mean when he’s drunk. (Don’t even ask us what we think of David Hedrick — at least not until after his trial is over.)

Only today, we discovered one Melvin Brown, pastor of Second Community Baptist Church in Venice, California, who— (more…)
