Because we could spend 24/7 tracking the sins of right-wing religionists (especially “youth pastors”) and never get caught up. Of the following, the more interesting cases will probably end up with their very own Conservative Babylon entries.

Tammy Futrell and Angel HoskieIndicted: Tammy Futrell, 47, church day-care center director and wife of Melvin Futrell, pastor, Bethel Temple Church of Deliverance, Norfolk, Virginia, Futrell’s daughter Angel Hoskie, 27, and Dinnetta Feeney, 44, in the May, 2010, death of 7-week-old Dylan Cummings. All three women worked in the child day care center operated by the church, where the “cribs were tightly packed ‘almost like an orphanage’” inside a supply closet. All have been charged with child cruelty, child neglect and child abuse; Futrell is also charged with homicide, and has been denied bond. Dylan’s mother told WAVY: “They’re a church, you know. I trusted because it’s a church and I figured they’re good whole people.” Story: WAVY, January 7, 2011; WTKR, January 7, 2011; Virginian-Pilot, January 12, 2011

Otis HollandCharged: Otis Holland, 54, United Faith Church, Henderson, Nevada, with multiple counts of sexual assault against a girl younger than 14, whom he was supposed to be “counseling,” over a period of about 20 months. The police report notes: “Otis stated to her that she couldn’t tell anyone about what had occurred due to the fact that if he was caught, he would go to prison for a long time and the church would be ruined and it would be all her fault.” The Las Vegas Sun notes: “Members of Holland’s congregation went to a police station after the allegations surfaced and argued Holland ‘was a good man who wouldn’t do that.” Story: KTNV, January 9, 2011; Las Vegas Sun, January 11, 2011

Jon James MaillardCharged: Jon James Maillard, 70, of Toronto, Ontario, formerly “active member” of the West Rouge Community Church, with sexually assaulting “two young girls” between 1975 and 1982. “Police believe there may be other victims. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Detective Constable Sharon Myers at 416−808−4300, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416−222−TIPS (8477), online at www.222tips.com, text TOR and your message to CRIMES (274637), or Leave A Tip on Facebook.” Story: Toronto Police Service, January 10, 2011

SwazilandCharged: Timothy Mafa Mngometulu, 68, evangelical pastor, Hlengela, Swaziland, with the rape of a 13-year-old girl. “It was said that the alleged rapist did not use a condom when forcing himself on the minor, therefore putting the complainant at risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections.” Story: Swazi Observer, January 12, 2011

Arturo TenorioCharged: Arturo Tenorio, 57, of Midvale, Utah, fake marriage counselor who was recommended by a local church bishop to Mormon couples, with two felony counts of forcible sexual abuse allegedly committed against two women under his “care.” Arturo Tenorio is the brother of Octaviano Tenorio, general authority and member of the First Quorum of the Seventy of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Story: KJCT8, January 11, 2011

James M. WilsonRe-indicted: James M. Wilson, 44, former pastor & principal, Terrill Road Christian Academy, Moberly, Missouri, on charges that in 2008 he kidnapped a 16-year-old girl and took her to a motel with the intent of “perform[ing] second-degree statutory sodomy or second-degree statutory rape.” Acquitted of child molestation in 2009, the prosecutor re-filed a kidnapping charge in early 2010, and Wilson was indicted last month. Notes the Columbia Daily Tribune: “The victim might have been targeted because she had the mental capability of a third-grader at the time, according to court documents.” Story: Columbia Daily Tribune, January 11, 2011
