Wife of New Florida GOP Head Takes Blame for Hubby Pushing Her, Leaving Bruises, Pinning Her to Floor & Choking Her (’Cause She Was “Young & Irresponsible”)
Video after the jump.
Meet Dave and Wendy Bitner, stars of our Sanctity of Submissiveness Story of the Month. We’ll get back to Dave and Wendy in a moment. First, we want to return to a question we asked just a few short weeks ago:
We think we know the answer now.
First, there was former state party head Jim Greer, who’s about to go on trial on charges of stealing more than $125,000 from his own party, and of money laundering.
In the running to take Greer’s place was Deborah Cox-Roush, Hillsborough County GOP chair, who had to explain away revelations of a 2004 drunk-driving bust. A long, impassioned open letter saw Cox-Rousch patting herself on the back for being “willing to admit mistakes” — but never answering the question of why she didn’t bother to admit her “mistake” for six years, until somebody found out about it.
Next up was state House Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-13th), whose company, and business partner, are in hot water with the FEC. Vern’s not exactly in trouble himself, but it sounds like some awfully funny money trading went on with his campaign donors.
Finally, on January 15th the Republican Party of Florida settled on its new leader, Dave Bitner, a former state legislator and lobbyist who—
Uh-oh…
An anonymous packet dropped at the St. Petersburg Times shows that in 1999 Bitner’s wife Wendy sought a domestic violence injunction, accusing Bitner of “pushing her around his office” and leaving bruises on her arms. The petition, later dismissed at Mrs. Bitner’s request, says that in 1997 Bitner also pinned her to the floor and choked her “to the point of near unconsciousness.”

But,wait! Here’s what’s really infuriating — the video Bitner and his wife made to “address any rumors, innuendoes, and lies you may have heard,” and in which Wendy Bitner takes all the blame for the problems in their “sacred union”:
“Many, many years ago, Dave and I went through a really tough time in our marriage. Marriage is hard work. I was young, and I acted irresponsibly. …”
We’re all for people working out problems in their marriages, but for a wife to take the rap for a husband’s alleged physical abuse… We’re not usually at a loss for words, but in this case, sheer disgust overcomes eloquence.
Are we supposed to believe Wendy Bitner just made the whole thing up?
