Benjamin Levi Lawless (R-WingNut, Md.)

Benjamin Levi LawlessClaims to fame: Momentary Republican candidate, U.S. House of Representatives, Maryland, 2010 (withdrew); failed Republican state senate candidate, Maryland’s 8th District, 2010; Teabaggy wingnut; Eagle Scout; ex-U.S. Marine; self-described liar & sociopath; accused burglar

Moral apex: Busted in November, 2010, on suspicion of breaking into two different jewelry stores, just weeks after he was completely slaughtered in the Republican primary for state senate by Dee Hodges, 72%-28%. But we’ll get back to his arrest in a moment. First, let’s see just what sort of person Benjamin Lawless is.

Scary: The last status update on his Facebook wall, dated September 26, 2010, read:

Benjamin Lawless
Recently several personal issues in my life that have built up over time have come to head. I have always been a psychopath and sociopath and I used to be good at hiding or controlling my problems; until now. Read my comment for more information.

Benjamin Lawless
I have never liked people, unless they were socially acceptable by my own varying standards. I have always had dillusions of grandeur and thought that I was better than anyone and everyone else. I have always been a liar, with a capital “L….” If I have ever told you anything, chances are, it was a lie. I have never had patience with anything. I was actually, often, full of rage. At the same time, I would have murderous homicidal and suicidal thoughts, constantly, with no sympathy or empathy for others. Thankfully, I never crossed that line. As do most sociopaths, I was very spontaneous, often negatively. Like my recent trips to the Gentlemen’s Gold Club where I spent thousands of my and my wife’s dollars, saved for bills, on exotic dancers. As a direct result of my lack of care for others including my own immediate family, wife and three children, several personal checks written for bills have bounced, we’ve lost our home and one vehicle to their lien holders. The Marine Corps failure to pay me on time, poured a mountain of salt on an ever-growing wound. My wife of 8 years has left me, but continues to be the key role player in my recovery.

I have hit rock bottom. Having never drank alcohol or tried drugs, I never thought it could happen.

Last week, with the help of Jacksonville Police Department SWAT, I checked myself into an inpatient psychological disorder recovery center in North Carolina. I’ve made some progress, but more is needed. I am going to continue my therapy via outpatient care and medication. I will be here for some time. The needed therapy, endless.

I have not told a lie in 18 days and I have not thought of harming myself or anyone else in 10 days. For someone who would do this dozens of times per day, these numbers show progress.

I will be back in Maryland again soon to settle business, both personal and professional. If you do not hear from me, feel free to contact me.

I want to thank all of my true friends (you know who you are, if you’re not sure, than you’re not) for understanding that I have a lot of issues that must be dealt with now.

To the love of my life and the mother of my children, you and our babies are the only part of me that has ever been real.

What has he lied about? Only he knows. We suspect one of the things he lied about was that he’d been “shortlisted” for the post of lieutenant governor, when he couldn’t possibly have been — for many reasons, we’re sure, but primarily because he was just too young for the job. And then there’s his Facebook page again, where he lists the Maryland State Senate among his employers.

He’s a Teabagger, too? Well, if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck…

• He crows constantly about the Second Amendment and complete deregulation (or literal lawlessness!) of firearms.

• He’s a fan of Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly, and Mike Huckabee, among other right-wing extremists. And then there’s his second-favorite quote (his first fave is his own): “Firearms are second only to the Constitution in importance; they are the peoples’ liberty teeth.” — George Washington

Benjamin Lawless's Nonexistent 'Gala' with Ann Coulter• Although his campaign website (Lawless For Maryland) has been thoroughly gutted, there still exists a site, baltimoregala.com, advertising a black-tie fundraiser that never took place, touting as speaker every crackpot’s favorite pin-up, insect-like Ann Coulter.

So, about that arrest… On November 24, 2010, this press release was issued by the Jacksonville, North Carolina, police (remember, Lawless said he “checked [himself] into an inpatient psychological disorder recovery center in North Carolina”):

B & E Suspect Apprehended After Multi Jurisdictional Investigation

As a result of a joint investigation with the Morehead City Police Department, Jacksonville Police have arrested Benjamin Levi Lawless, 26, of 1120 Ben Williams Road, Richlands, in conjunction with two Breaking and Entering incidents at retail businesses in the City.

During the early morning hours of Sunday, November 21, 2010, two retail jewelry sales businesses, The Corner Jewelers, 233 Western Boulevard, and Time Hour Square, 210 Brynn Marr Road, were broken into with the front glass doors of the business being smashed with a blunt object. There was no suspect information at the time these crimes occurred.

Detectives from the Morehead City Police Department advised JPD of a case they had under investigation involving a break-in and theft of several watches at JR Dunn Jewelers in Morehead City. The goods stolen from JR Dunn Jewelers were traced to Jacksonville, where they were pawned by Benjamin Levi Lawless. The detectives determined that the incidents in Jacksonville and Morehead City occurred in a similar manner.

A review of JPD officer reports noted that Benjamin Lawless had been stopped in the area of 233 Western Blvd. during the time of the break-ins, which provided information regarding to Lawless’ presence in the area after the break-ins took place.

A search warrant for Mr. Lawless’ residence, person, and vehicles was secured as a result of the additional information and criminal arrest warrants. The warrants were served with the assistance of the Onslow Sheriff’s Department at 1120 Ben Williams Road. A large quantity of stolen watches was recovered, as well as the clothing worn by Lawless during the break-ins, and the tire-iron used in the incidents. Lawless made a full confession to his involvement in the crimes in Jacksonville and Morehead City and was taken into custody without incident. He remains in custody at the Onslow County Jail under $26,000 secured bond.
