Riiiiight… Never mind that “donations are down 7 percent compared with the same period in 2010″ (although they’re “up 5 percent over 2009″) — or, if somebody asked us here at ConBab Central to make an educated guess, that it maybe, sorta, kinda looks like Daystar might be economizing in order to shore up resources in anticipation of a big pay-out to somebody, somewhere (no, no, we don’t mean hush money, but maybe payout on a lawsuit or two they just maybe, might expect to lose). ‘Course, nobody asked us, and we couldn’t possibly know what’s really going on behind the scenes, and it just might be as the Star-Telegram says Daystar mouthpiece A. Larry Ross says: that the “move is intended to make better use of the capabilities of its headquarters.”

Stephen Douglas Berry • Barry Cook • Patrick Edouard
Adam Ronald Johnson • Derek Ripley
Because we could spend 24/7 tracking the sins of right-wing religionists (especially “youth pastors”) and never catch up. Of the following, the more interesting cases will probably end up with their very own Conservative Babylon entries.
Bail denied: Stephen Douglas Berry, 38, former associate pastor, New Life Baptist Church, Union County, South Carolina, who has been charged with second-degree criminal sexual conduct — specifically, sexual intercourse — with a 15-year-old girl between May and November, 2010. Per WSPA: “According to the church and the Union County Sheriff’s Office, Berry was the subject of a prior criminal investigation involving sexual misconduct allegations from an adult female. Sheriff David Taylor said the woman decided not to pursue charges, so the investigation was closed.” Nevertheless, a statement claimed the church was “saddened to learn of the allegations and arrest of Rev. Berry.” Story: WSPA, March 23, 2011; WYFF, March 23, 2011 (more…)

A Capitol Hill soap opera got another twist Thursday when a former staffer with whose wife Sen. Jon Ensign, R-Nev., had an affair, was charged by a Washington, DC grand jury with violating conflict of interest laws.
Doug Hampton has been public and vocal in his criticism of Ensign, his former boss, casting himself as a whistleblower. Hampton worked in Ensign’s office from January 2007 to April 2008, until his wife Cindy Hampton was at the center of a sex scandal for an affair she had with Sen. Ensign. The affair had been ongoing while Hampton had been employed in Sen. Ensign’s office. …

Maricopa County Supervisor Fulton Brock got himself in a bit of hot water for smuggling fast-food hamburgers and other special treats into prison for his pervy, cheating, child-molesting Celestial Wife (whom he’s supposed to be divorcing) — now the question is: Was he slipping her something besides meat patties behind bars? Not guilty plea: Sean Feltman, 24, former youth pastor, Willamette Community Church, Albany, Oregon, to the charge of attempting to “lure” a 14-year-old girl who belonged to the church youth group led by Feltman. Per KPTV, “Police say they began to investigate Feltman on Jan. 9, when the parents of a 14-year-old girl who attends the church youth group reported their daughter received sexually explicit text messages and online messages from the man. The church says Feltman resigned one week later. Officers arrested Feltman [March 4, 2011].” Story: KPTV, March 10, 2011; KPTV, March 16, 2011

We thought the case of Dwight Bullock, former youth pastor at Moore Chapel CME (Christian Methodist Episcopal), Jasper, Texas, was all wrapped up when he was sentenced in December to two concurrent 10-year sentences after pleading guilty to aggravated sexual assault (and worse) against two young boys, ages 11 and 13. But, noooo…! (more…)

Charged: Anthony Dale Newton, a.k.a. Tony Newton, 51, former pastor, H2O Church, Lexington, Tennessee, with aggravated statutory rape and sexual battery by an authority figure after reportedly having a 16-year-old girl give him oral sex during a New Year’s Eve church “lock-in” (an overnight — or longer — slumber party that literally involves “locking in” youth at the church for the duration of the festivities). Police say Newton (who is free on bond pending his next hearing) has admitted to the crime. (more…)
Confessed: Robert L. Stoner, 38, youth minister, Miracle Temple Holy Church, Wilmington, Delaware, to having sex with a 15-year-old female member of his church, “several times in his home ‘in the living room on the couch while his son was asleep,’” according to police. Stoner faces six counts of third-degree rape. Story: Delaware Online, March 18, 2011
Charged: Edward Fairley, 59, pastor, Koinonia and Christian Ministries, Paterson, New Jersey, with the attempted murder of associate pastor Simone Shields, 52, with whom, police say, the married Fairley was “in a relationship.” NewJersey.com reports that “authorities and a witness say, the Rev. Edward Fairley stormed into an Eastside home and, without a word, stabbed the Rev. Simone Shields several times in the face and torso, leaving her to lie in a pool of blood on the kitchen floor.” Police found a strangely calm Fairley “staggering through the streets soaked in blood and carrying a knife.” In 1983, Fairley broke into his estranged wife’s home and stabbed her, for which he served six years in prison. Sentenced: Lucy Adeniji Williams, 44, Nigerian-born pastor of “TLCCMINISTRIES (Where the Lord Cares),” London, U.K., to 11-1/2 years in prison after her conviction on 17 charges related to smuggling two African children and one 21-year-old woman into the U.K. to use them as domestic slaves in her East London home. “An illegal immigrant herself,” reports the BBC, Adeniji “had told the victims’ parents they would have a better life in the UK, but instead viciously beat them if they failed to please her.” (more…)
Out on bond: Brent Girouex, 31, former elder & youth pastor, Victory Fellowship Church (associated with Rick Joyner’s radically theocratic — and, of course, thoroughly homophobic — Morningstar Ministries, whose poster girl is Sarah Palin), Council Bluffs, Iowa, on $30,000 after turning himself in to police last month to confess to sexual contact with four males at his church. Since he was originally charged with 60 counts of “sexual exploitation by a counselor or therapist,” another eight alleged victims have come forward. At least one alleged victim was just 14 when the abuse — which Girouex calls “mutual” — began, with the incidents of sex acts numbering anywhere between 25 and 100 times over the course of four years. Girouex, who is married with children, reportedly said he “helped” teenagers “gain sexual purity” and overcome “homosexual urges by praying while [Girouex] had sexual contact with [the boys].” According to the Daily Nonpareil, Girouex explained to police: “When they would ejaculate, they would be getting rid of the evil thoughts in their mind.” Story: KETV, March 14, 2011; Daily Nonpareil, March 17, 2011
Charged: Marc L. Neal, 48, senior pastor, Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, Akron, Ohio; Dominion Family Worship Center, Atlanta, Georgia; presiding prelate, Come Alive Ministry International Fellowship; with felony assault, kidnapping and abduction after a repo man tried to repossess his Lexus. Neal reportedly hit the gas and peeled out with Ken Falzini clinging to the hood of the car, hitting speeds up of to 60mph as he raced through the streets, zig-zagging widly as he tried to throw the repo man to the ground — and reportedly laughing when he threatened to take Falzini out on the interstate. In Neal’s defense, his attorney said it was “disrespectful” to try to repossess Neal’s car at the church on a Sunday morning. (Falzini said he had no other address for Neal.) Neal has pleaded not guilty to all charges. Story: CUCollector.com, February 11, 2011; AkronNewsNow.com, March 7, 2011
Remember Colin Howell, the Northern Ireland Baptist lay preacher and dentist sentenced in December to 21 years in prison for the 1991 murders of his wife and a police constable who was the husband of Mr. Howell’s extramarital lover?
Well, that lover, Hazel Stewart, 49, was recently convicted of conspiring with Howell to kill her husband and his wife, and sentenced to 18-to-life in prison. (Of course, she plans to appeal, saying “she was under the dentist’s spell.”) (more…)
When Republican Herschel Young was elected commissioner of Cass County, Missouri, folks wondered if he’d be allowed to take the job, seeing as how he’s a convicted felon; see “Cass County Comish-Elect Herschel Young (R-FelonyAssault, Mo.): Boy-Basher, Boy-Kisser, or Both?,” November 9, 2010.
The good news: His election win was thrown out by a circuit judge, and Weird Herschel won’t be taking office, ever again — at least in Missouri, where convicted felons are barred from holding public office.
Young, meanwhile, says he’ll take his case “all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.” Observes Justin Kendall: “I’m sure the high court has nothing better to do than hear a case from a man who already has a new assault charge pending against him for supposedly throwing a teenager to the ground and trying to kiss him.”

Defrocked: Franklin E. Huntress, Jr., 77, retired Episcopal priest, by the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts, who “relinquished his priestly orders rather than face a church trial” (COE Newspaper) “after a church investigation into allegations that he abused children in separate incidents 20 years apart”; the investigation “uncovered the fact that Huntress had been arrested on charges of child sexual abuse in England in 1994.” Story: SalemNews.com, February 26, 2011; Boston.com, February 27, 2011; The Church of England Newspaper, March 10, 2011
Arrested: Joe David Nelms, 47, former youth pastor (and, with his wife, Sunday school teacher), First Baptist Church Lindale, Lindale, Texas; former youth pastor, Sky Ranch, a Christian Bible camp (”that enrich[es] lives and build solid Christian character”), Van, Texas; and former youth pastor, Pacific Coast Church, San Clemente, California; on suspicion of lewd acts with a child; i.e., sexually molesting a girl under the age of 14 between 1993 and 1996, in various locations, including the offices of Pacific Coast Church, where the girl and her family were parishioners. It took this long for the alleged victim, now in her 30s, to “work up the courage” to come forward with the accusation. Currently in custody in Texas, Nelms faces extradition to California; CBS notes: “Although the alleged acts occurred more than 10 years ago, prosecutors are seeking to have the statute of limitations waived because investigators believe there was ’substantial contact,’ the girl was underage and the age difference between the alleged molester and victim, [Orange County Sheriff's spokesman Jim Armomino] said.” Unsurprisingly, Dan Anderson, one of the pastors of Pacific Coast Church, donated $100 to California’s 2008 anti-gay marriage ban, Proposition 8. Sentenced: Jade Watson, 44, former evangelist, Church of England’s “Church Army,” former prison chaplain, Winchester Prison, Hampshire, England, & wife & mother of two, to eight months after pleading guilty to “misconduct in a public office.” Watson had had sex with ex-con Daniel Thornton; after Thornton was sent back to jail, Watson smuggled vodka, a cell phone, and muscle-building energy bars into the prison for Thornton. Per Sify News: “Watson claimed she was blackmailed into doing it after she was persuaded to text a photo of herself in her underwear to his mobile phone, and her husband Peter, who is also a Church Army member, is standing by her.” Story: Daily Echo, March 15, 2011; Sify News, March 16, 2011

Accused of providing legal advice to prison inmates (and charging them for it), Mitchell is being held on a $150,000 bond. WCSC reports: “Court documents reveal that Mitchell was convicted in 2005 of forgery and grand larceny and was paroled in 2007.” Story: WCSC, March 17, 2011; Post and Courier, March 18, 2011
