There Is A God: Newt Quits

Newt GingrichLet’s see: Newtie is almost 69 years old now, and will be 73 in 2016… Could this be the last time we’ll have to listen to the big crybaby quite so often (at least, until he makes another hate-the-gays TV ad)? If we were the praying sort, we’d say: “Let us pray.”

Linda Ocasio at the Star-Ledger delivers the good news in a headline practically oozing with relief:Newt Gingrich drops out of race, at long last

I was shocked that he tried this season, but he was able to find a wealthy backer (which didn’t help in the end.) He should have seen that his time in the House would have worked againt him….this election shows me that the GOP does not have enough “presidentially electible” in it’s party, and that they aren’t willing to let some of the new blood have a shot at the presidency.

Well, the GOP does tend to let all its second- (or third-, or ninth-) stringers have a “turn” at the prez nom, at least in election years when they know they can’t possibly win.

Not that Obama is the Second Coming of Christ who’s going to win by a landslide — not by a long shot — but the GOoPers have shot themselves in their collective foot so many times (allowing the Teabagger takeover; betting on a new war on women that was a rude awakening to young, “third-wave feminists” who didn’t even know they were third-wave feminists [and who'd taken their own bodily autonomy for granted since day one, 'cause their moms and grandmas did all the hard work before they were born]; alienating desperately-needed Latino voters with their insane anti-immigration laws; etc., etc.), the Dems could run a houseplant this November and win.

2012 may go down in history as the year the GOP let everybody at the very bottom of the barrel have a go. Not too concerned about November here — the real concern is 2016. Who have they got in mind?

Jeb? Rubio? No… Somebody in the wings we haven’t even heard of yet.

And the other worrisome question is: Will Joe Biden be the Dem nom? If the DNC is smart, he won’t be; the nom will be somebody as young and fierce as the Repubs most likely have in mind.

Problem is, the one thing — no, make that two things — the Repubs have over the Dems: foresight and tenacity.

    Errata:

“Politicians” should go after “presidentally electible.”
