The Hypocrisy Files: Conservative Christians Who Refuse to Recognize Their Own Socialism
“Let’s consider some of the programs we don’t hear conservative Christians reject: the socialist school system, the socialist retirement system, socialist medical care for the elderly, socialist student loans, and the socialist police and fire services. They support child tax credits, home mortgage tax subsidies, tax money for private schools. These things are as socialist as Cuban healthcare, but conservative Christians embrace them, defend them, love them. Oh, and how they adore the military.
“On the other hand, conservative Christians have been mobilized to rally against Obamacare. They complain about welfare payments to the poor. They loathe affirmative action and all its variants. They call these things Socialist and they reject them.
“Perhaps you can see a pattern developing. Government subsidies for me are blessed attempts to put family values at the center of our society. Government subsidies for the Other are Socialist and will destroy the republic. Conservative Christians refuse to acknowledge the socialist nature of our school system because they have kids, and they want other people to pay for their kids’ education. They gladly accept welfare in the form of a ‘free’ education, but dare not call it socialist because it benefits them. And they’re not socialists, so they tell themselves. In the same way, they are more than happy calling the local socialist fire department. They don’t call it that because it benefits them.”
