Suzi Schmidt (R-Ill.): Domestic Disputes Begin At Home… And Sometimes Spill Over the Fence

Suzi SchmidtVideo after the jump.

Good thing she isn’t running for reelection. (Not that Republicans, despite all their empty talk about the “sanctity of marriage,” have any trouble voting for a soon-to-be-divorcée, but because accusations of ramming your husband’s car and biting him on the arms might worry Republican men about their own wives getting any ideas).

The short version: “Schmidt and her husband Bob were married in 1980 and currently reside in Lake Villa, Illinois. On August 16, 2011, police were called to the Schmidt home by Bob Schmidt regarding a domestic dispute. Police did not release further details on the ongoing investigation of what they called a ‘verbal argument.’ …

“The police were again called to the Schmidt home twice in September 2011. The last 911 call made on September 26 was recorded, and has led to implications that Schmidt may have intended to use her political position to influence Lake County authorities against intervening in the matter” — specifically, telling the cops to “ignore” her husband if he called them again — “Schmidt later issued a press release to deny that this was her intent and apologize for the inappropriateness of the comments. Robert Schmidt consistently conveyed to the media that he considered the affair to be a private matter and did not wish to comment further. …”

Which leads us to the latest: “State Sen. Suzi Schmidt was arrested by Lake County Sheriff’s deputies in the early evening of June 12, 2012 on a misdemeanor warrant alleging that she damaged her neighbor’s property and trespassed, both stemming from a dispute with her neighbor. Officers also served Schmidt with an ‘emergency stalking no contact order,’ which orders her to stay away from the same neighbor, according to a press release issued by Chief Wayne Hunter, spokesman for the sheriff’s office. According to the warrant, she trespassed on her neighbor’s property after being warned previously to stay off their property and damaged her neighbor’s animal’s feed bag in the videorecorded incident that led to her arrest.”

WLS fills in the details: “The alleged victims — a man and wife described as ‘close friends’ of Schmidt’s family — say the trouble began in December 2010 with harassing phone calls, text messages, and emails from the state senator accusing the female neighbor of having an affair with Schmidt’s husband Robert. The woman denies the charge.

“Then in March of this year, the couple says Schmidt spoke to their 7-year-old son about the alleged affair, prompting the couple to call police.

“And just this past weekend, the neighbors say they confronted the state senator after she photographed their vehicles while hiding in bushes.”

As for what Schmidt allegedly did while she was allegedly trespassing, the neighbors say she took a chicken feed bag and threw it into a swamp, which, the neighbors say, they caught on tape.

True to type, Bob Schmidt refuses to say anything about this matter, either. It sounds to us like the Schmidts’ neighbors aren’t the only ones who own chickens.

And Suzi Schmidt sounds like… someone we wouldn’t want as our neighbor.
