Nebraska Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy: Another Day, Another Republican Divorce… And Some Unsourced Rumors

Rick SheehyClaims to fame: Democrat-turned-Republican Lieutenant Governor of Nebraska (2005 – ); Nebraska director of Homeland Security; 2014 gubernatorial candidate; former Hastings City Councilmember; former Hastings mayor; father of two; soon-to-be divorcé

Moral apex: His upcoming divorce, of course. His for-now wife, who’s moved out of the house, was the one to file the papers, which state the 29-year marriage is “irretrievably broken.”

What’s the problem? Beats us. All Sheehy offers is a grammatically-crippled statement through a spokesperson, concluding that the divorce is “truly a personal issue between Connie and I.”

Hmmm…

In 2011, Sheehy’s then-21-year-old son, Joel, quite the gun nut , shot himself in the face. (This was referred to euphemistically as a “family event.”) Although Omaha.com reports that “prosecutors determined he illegally possessed the 9 mm handgun with which he shot himself,” misdemeanor charges were dropped because, said City Prosecutor Marty Conboy, Joel Sheehy “was preparing to comply with the law.”

Well, now, that’s a handy-dandy defense to keep in mind: “Yeah, I was gonna tape up the tag, you know, to be in full compliance, but, uh, it must’ve, uh… It must’ve slipped my mind. So maybe the best thing to do would be to take care of that right here in Brainerd. … Yeah, I wanna be in compliance. …”

Plus, Joel Sheehy’s lawyer also argued that a snowstorm kept the lad from registering the Glock 9mm, and the prosecutor bought into it. (So, what, he couldn’t have stopped on the way home from buying the piece to register it? After all, he’d wanna be in full compliance… right?)

Plus, Joel Sheehy “was charged with failure to appear after he did not show up for his May 10 arraignment in Douglas County Court on the original charge. A judge issued a bench warrant for Sheehy. Rick Sheehy said his son failed to appear because of a ‘paperwork’ mistake.”

Meanwhile, one right-wing blogger — Objective Conservative (who, judging by his “Christian nation” stance and in-your-face branding of Barack Obama as Vladimir Lenin, is hardly “objective”) — is making noises about “allegations from several sources that Sheehy’s personal life may be under investigation by the news media if not the state itself. We’ve talked to sources in both state government and in private industry who are telling us pretty much the same thing. That is that there may be numerous documented cases of infidelity across the state of Nebraska during Sheehy’s duties and travels as Lt. Governor. That would mean that taxpayers and the state through expenses paid on behalf of Sheehy’s travels have abetted such activity. It would bring into question the need and reason for his travels across the state and the expenses related to such.”

Is he telling the truth? We have no idea. Un-Objective Conservative may know what he’s talking about, or he may be full of beans. We suppose we’ll find out soon enough, either when the Sheehy divorce gets way fugly — or it doesn’t.

Meanwhile, one must ask: If Lt. Gov. Sheehy can’t run his own family successfully, what makes anyone think he can do a better job with an entire state?

Suggested Bible reading for Mr. Sheehy:

Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place.

— Nehemiah 13:11
