The Hypocrisy Files: Which Christian Virtues And Values?
“I have read now a number of times about the Christian virtues and values upon which Ocean City was founded. As a relative newcomer, I keep wondering about what exactly those virtues and values might be. Are they what allowed the Crusaders to slaughter thousands of men, women and children attempting to reclaim the ‘Holy Land,’ or perhaps their sins during the Inquisition? Maybe the church elders of Salem held them close when they hanged witches or perhaps the ministers, who supported slavery here and apartheid elsewhere, employed them. Did those ministers who were silent or even supported the Nazis while they plundered the Earth and slaughtered millions base their behavior on those values? …
“The point is that those virtues and values must be identified by name, since just calling them Christian can mean widely different things to different people. If the terms are intended to refer to such character traits as kindness, tolerance, charity, temperance and the like, there are as many non-Christians who live their lives that way as there are Christians who do not.”
