Tim Bothell: Utah Mormon Stake Leader, LDS & BYU Employee & Boy Scout Leader Charged With Sexually Abusing Two Young Girls (“Accidentally”… Eight Times)
Despite the uncanny resemblance to FLDS cult leader Warren Jeffs, this is a leader from the other side of the fundy / so-called “reformed” Mormon divide: Timothy William Bothell.
August 17, 2012 — Timothy William Bothell, 43 years old, was arrested yesterday by a Centerville Police detective. He was booked into Davis County Jail on two 1st degree felony counts of Aggravated Sexual Abuse of a Child and four counts of Class A misdemeanor charges of Lewdness Involving a child. Tim Bothell, a resident of Centerville, served on a local Stake High Council for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at the time of his arrest. He was also employed by the LDS Church.
There are two female victims in this case who are both friends of the family ages 13 and 11. The alleged assaults and lewdness crimes took place in the home of Tim Bothell beginning near Christmas time of 2011.
Tim Bothell was confronted by his wife last week, and he reportedly admitted to committing inappropriate sexual contact with at least one of the victims. Mr. Bothell contacted Child Protective Services who then contacted Centerville Police last Friday afternoon. Centerville Police started the investigation on Monday August 13th. Both victims were interviewed at the Children’s Justice Center during the week, and Mr. Bothell was interviewed yesterday when he admitted to the charges and was booked after the interview.
Tim Bothell reportedly touched the genitals of the 13 year old girl while she slept at his home sometime around Christmas 2011. Shortly after this, Mr. Bothell is said to have placed his penis in the same 13 year old girl’s hand while she slept. The victim reportedly woke up as this was occurring. Both girls say that Mr. Bothell exposed his genitals to them on several different occasions; they were able to give specific information on four separate incidents. One of the victims said she has seen Mr. Bothell naked approximately twelve different times. Mr. Bothell admits to accidently exposing himself to the girls eight times.
The aggravated charge is alleged because Tim Bothell holds a Position of Trust in relationship to the victims.
As for his position with the LDS church, Bothell managed the Missionary Department; as a poster at ExMormon.org notes, this means he “goes around and trains mission presidents.” He did this for nine years, until he was canned by the church after his arrest. As another exmo notes, the church is “already distancing itself” from Bothell, “calling him a ‘former employee’ and not a fired employee as a result of his arrest. He was arrested on Thursday and fired on Friday. They are also saying that his ‘former and current positions’ do not ‘play any part in the case’. Not so fast Trotter,* you effing spinmeister, as an ecclesiastical authority the crime is more severe with the minors. Bothell was in the Centerville Stake High Council.”
Bothell was also Faculty Development Coordinator at Brigham Young University (his alma mater) for a couple of years, teaching undergrad classes in Educational Psychology, Instructional Psychology and Technology.
Before that, he spent four and a half years as director of the Center for Research and Assessment at FranklinCovey — the über-Mormon, Utah-based business-management conglomerate (founded by the rabidly anti-gay hypocrite (and dead Mormon who “helped shape Mitt Romney”) Stephen Covey, author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People).
To top it all off, Bothell was (or maybe still is, for the moment) a “Varsity Scout** coach in the Orem 7th Ward of the Orem Utah Stake.” (Of course, at least one of his three kids is an Eagle Scout.)

Memorable, highly ironic quote (from an ironically-titled article):
I believe it is extremely important to teach my children the truths of the Gospel. There are certain revealed truths that must be understand if my children are to feel and recognize the Spirit on their own without my assistance. Some of those truths include the dual nature of our beings. We do have physical bodies and spirits that make up our soul. This doctrine was made clear in a revelation given to the Prophet Joseph Smith:
And the spirit and the body are the soul of man.
Although people don’t have to believe this doctrine to be spiritual, those who believe and understand this truth can have a spiritual advantage because they can understand the connection between the body and the spirit.

Re the idea that physical bodies are part of the soul — a concept that directly contradicts one of the most basic tenets of Christianity — yes: Mormons believe they will be reunited, literally, with their physical bodies after they die. To see a Mormon try to explain this belief, sans logic, evidence, or any preiously known (Christian) theology on which it is based, see this fascinating but ultimately frustrating exchange in which Angie the Anti-Theist (one of our favorite bloggers) patiently but futilely attempts to tweeze any sense out of an official church representative.
So I’m guessing this story won’t run in the Church News.
Besides the individual harm, what bothers me is these sorts of incidents are characterized only as individual failings by the church. They don’t seem to prompt a reevaluation of the church’s teachings and attitudes toward sexuality and its history of polygamy. Mormonism, I believe, stunts the development of sexuality in such a way that makes incidents like these more likely rather than less.
How do you “accidently” [sic] expose yourself to children eight times?
In what kind of “community involvement” did he, as a trusted person, have the opportunity to sexually abuse and “accidentally” expose his genitals at least eight times?
you don’t “accidentally” show your genitals to young girls EIGHT TIMES!
You do if you are a pasty white male that has been called to perform ecclesiastical work for The One True Church which is not to be confused with their southern FLDS cousins at the Not Quite So True Church.
He “accidentally” exposed himself 8 different times…? Is that similar to how Joe Smith accidentally “married” other men’s wives and 14 year old girls on numerous occasions behind his legal wife’s back..?
[Scott Trotter] clearly says “current or former church positions” not positions of employment. The KTVU piece is headlined that he was serving as High-Council member. The spin was that “Trotter said that Bothell was an employee of the church but is not any longer” not mentioning that he was only fired last night only as a result of his arrest. It doesn’t matter really which position he is reffering to. The perv was an ecclesiastical authority for the Mormon church and a trusted authority to the girls. Trotter is distancing the church from Bothell as fast as he can spin it.
Trotter said that Bothell was an employee of the church but is not any longer. Trotter also said that “neither [Bothell’s] current or former church positions play any part in this case.”
I’d guess that his leadership position had a great deal to do with his ability to be around children (ie the parents trusted him).
Jesus really needs to start vetting his employees better.
Seems to me that this kind of thing is more likely to happen within organizations that try to arrest the sexual development of their membership at age 12.
Some day members of the church will wake up and demand change and not allow their children to be interviewed by an adult about morality issues alone in an office. Especially female children by older men. Brother Bothell was on an LDS High Council, because of that he was also most likely to have been in a bishopric or a bishop in the past doing these interviews with young females. Also I understand that one of his jobs in the missionary department was helping train mission presidents so it is not a stretch to assume over the years he has met with several general authorities of the LDS church at the highest levels or at least shook their hands. …
Yes, what is funny is there are church members that will fight tooth an [sic] nail to keep sex education out of schools. You know the teaching of facts about sex in group setting by professionals to help prepare kids for life and how to handle sex in a positive and informed manner. But when it comes to church they will let Bishop truck driver, lawyer, investment banker, or store clark interview their teenage kids about sexual and moral matters alone in a office and think nothing of it. Oh Bishop so and so would not do anything or ask anything inappropriate, maybe not but ya never know. why play russian roulette with your kids lives? Outside the church you would never let that happen.
I wonder how may Church Courts he sat on and helped excommunicate a returned missionary that got a little carried away with a girlfriend when he got home. Or, a divorced couple that had a moment of weakness. Or, a lonely widow? …

“Ex-LDS Church employee charged with child sex abuse”
Cimaron Neugebauer, Salt Lake Tribune, August 17,2012
* Trotter = Mormon spokesmodel Scott Trotter, whose job it is to distance the church from anything that suggests Mormons aren’t all little demi-gods already.
“Varsity Scouting was the brainchild of Dr. J. D. Mortensen, a prominent thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon in Salt Lake City, Utah, and an influential member of the Boy Scouts of America. He served for 13 years on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Young Men Mutual Improvement Association (YMMIA) General Board and for several years as chairman of its General Scout Committee. He wrote numerous manuals and supplements for the YMMIA. He served on the faculty at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, as advancement chairman for the Great Salt Lake Council, and as a chaplain at four national Scout jamborees. He was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, Silver Antelope Award, and the Silver Beehive Award for his work in Scouting.
“The major sponsors of Scouting in the early 1970s were the Catholic and Protestant Churches. Dr. Mortensen observed that Scouts belonging to units chartered to these organizations tended to remain in Scouting longer and advance further than did the Scouts in units sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). The LDS Church’s Aaronic Priesthood/Young Men organization used Boy Scouting and Exploring as its activity arm in the United States. No other organization has adopted Scouting as the official program for its young men in the same way as the LDS Church. The concepts of priesthood, quorums, and youth leadership led directly to the development of Varsity Scouting.”
In fact, the BSA is overwhelmed by the Mormon church, and those few pockets not LDS-controlled are usually Catholic-controlled (which should tell you why the Boy Scouts will never lift its repulsive anti-gay, anti-atheist discrimination policies — no matter how many Eagle Scouts return their badges in protest; e.g. 2000; 2012):
Mormonism has morphed the Boy Scouts into a religious organization in which they use to indoctrinate the young men into a lifetime of church membership. Awards and rewards are based on Mormon Priesthood rules and regulations. More emphasis is placed on indoctrination and obedience to the Mormon Gospel. Young men are accelerated through the program faster than boys outside the Mormon controlled BSA. Mormon boys can receive an Eagle Award simply by placing bags on neighbor doors to collect food for homeless shelters.

As MSNBC reports, Mormon involvement in Scouting has even reached the point where Brigham Young University is offering a new major in Scouting:
The Boy Scouts are the official boys” youth group of the LDS, and more than one in nine Scouts are Mormons. Critics say the church exerts disproportionate influence through membership on the national advisory council and vigorous fund-raising. (In New York, LDS leaders recently launched a fund-raising campaign with pamphlets carrying an endorsement from the church”s current prophet.)
Next to the Mormons, the Roman Catholic Church is also a major supporter of the Boy Scouts and their endorsement of anti-gay and anti-atheist policies has been crucial for the continued bigotry and discrimination.

Several months ago, the Mormons drew another line in the sand over a controversial issue: if BSA units (the troops and packs sponsored by religious and other organizations) must accept homosexuals as leaders, the church would drop out and take its 400,000 scouts — about 12 percent of the BSA”s total membership — with it. (Sponsoring a Scout troop or Cub pack means taking the responsibility for running it — everything from providing a meeting place and raising funds to choosing leaders.) …
More than any other factor, the close relationship between the BSA and religious organizations like the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) — the Mormons — explains why the BSA pursued its anti-gay policy all the way to the Supreme Court. It also explains why the BSA stands alone among Boy Scout organizations around the world, and among other youth-serving organizations including the Girl Scouts, the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Association, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, in barring homosexuals. …
[N]o group embraced Scouting more enthusiastically than the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Over the years, Scouting became the official youth-ministry program for Mormon boys.

(Patrick Boyle is the author of the preeminent exposé on the sexual molestation epidemic in the Boy Scouts, Scout’s Honor: Sexual Abuse in America’s Most Trusted Institution. Not at all sensationalistic, Boyle offers some much-needed insight not only into the minds of incurable pedophiles, but how they are so often able to make their way into leadership positions in the BSA — and how the BSA structure offers an all-you-can-eat smorgasbord for their insatiable hunger.)
