Death Threat to Joe Jervis (Joe.My.God.) for Tweeting Facts About Family Research Council

Facts such as:

• “@Dloesch Do you also condemn the FRC’s claim that gay people are inherently mentally ill pedophiles? http://bit.ly/wKMrjj” (August 15, 2012)

• “New From JMG: FRC President Tony Perkins Supported Former KKK Leader David Duke And Louisiana’s White Supremacis… bit.ly/NJoAyq” (August 17, 2012)

And for these truths, Joe gets this — punctuated by a very clear photo of a man hanged from the neck by a construction crane.

Just as bad is Twitter’s response, as reported by Joe: “We have investigated the reported account and have found that it’s not in violation of the Twitter Rules at this time. …”

Shame on you, Twitter. If someone had tweeted such a message (and such a graphic graphic) to an elected official (say, President Obama), would your response be, “the content of this account lacks the specificity to meet the criteria of an actionable threat”? Would you wait until an FBI subpoena — or a couple of Secret Service agents in Foster Grants — showed up at your door before you were persuaded to yank the offender’s account?

Small wonder the JMG situation caught our attention. We care, big-time, about everyone (even to the last delusional fundygelical) whose safety is threatened — but in addition:

If we’re a bit quieter than usual here at ConBab, it’s because we’re working on something we decided to begin a couple of days ago: presenting enough material to help even the most undecided fence-sitter answer the question: Is the Family Research Council a hate group or not?

We’ll never be as well-known as Joe, but if we get even one such threat… well, it certainly won’t be the first time — via email, via the Web, via telephone, or at our home.

We would never say something so stupid as “Bring it on” — we don’t want death threats (no sane person would) — but we’re braced for anything that may come. And, this time, we won’t be surprised… esepcially in light of this most recent example of just how aggressive certain anti-gays can be.

Believe you us: If it happens, we’ll go straight to the FBI with it — and that won’t be a first, either.
