The Hypocrisy Files: Christian Fundies Not Quite the “Patriots” They Think They Are
“One of the many peculiarities is that millions of fundamentalist Christians consider themselves especially patriotic Americans, though in reality it is quite impossible to reconcile the views of the Founding Fathers with those of the Bible on a number of important questions.
“To give only a few examples:
“1. The Bible implies in many places the union of church and state, whereas the American system is based on the separation of church and state.
“2. The Bible generally teaches that civil power comes from God, whereas the Constitution asserts that it derives from the consent of the governed.
“3. The New Testament preaches that there is one true religion and that all others are an abomination, whereas the American system tolerates all religions and permits none to attain dominance.
“4. The Old Testament condones slavery and bigotry against outsiders, whereas the American system outlaws slavery and discrimination.”
