Proud Patriot Franklin Sain: “Hopefully Somebody Gifords [sic] Both of Your Asses With a Gun”

Franklin SainClaims to fame: Former Chief Operating Officer (September, 2011 – February, 2013), Softec Solutions, Englewood, Colorado; former Director of IT Solutions, Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), where he handled government contracts; alumnus, Wayland Baptist University, Plainview, Texas; alumnus, Regis University, Denver, Colorado; U.S. Army veteran (1988-98), “specializing in Intel and Intelligence Applications”; accused would-be assassin

Moral apex: Arrested “for investigation of harassment and attempt to influence a public official” after allegedly phoning and sending a volley of emails to Colorado House Rep. Rhonda Fields (D-Aurora) — the first African-American woman elected to the state legislature (yes, this is important; you’ll see why) — threatening her life and that of her daughter, in apparent response to Fields’s sponsorship of two gun-control measures.

So, he went crazy because she wants to take everybody’s guns away? Well, we can only speculate on the “crazy” part, but in answer to the latter half of your question: Nahhh. Hey, we like guns (a lot — we’re not hunters, but we love target shooting, of the paper-target variety), but we don’t see anything “controversial” (as the mainstream media keeps repeating) about the two measures Fields is backing. One would ban high-capacity magazines of more than 15 rounds (really, do you want to hunt, or do you want to shred a deer into hamburger?) and the other would make background checks mandatory for all gun sales (including private transfers). We don’t think there’s anything radical or draconian there. In fact, we think such measures are simple common sense.

Okay, so what did this Frank Sain fellow do, exactly? He’s accused of sending some really scary, hateful, mindbogglingly racist and sexist emails to Fields.

What did they say? Are you sure you want to know? They’re really bad.

Yes, I’m sure. Okay… Here’s our transcript from the arrest affidavit (kindly provided by 9news.com); redacted stuff as redacted in the online version (which we would have redacted anyway); spelling, grammar and punctuation errors as in original:

THANKS N— C—! You really think passing any more laws will stop gun violence. You and that other N— OBAMA are living in fanatasy land. Chicago and DC have the most strict gun laws in the nation and more people die from gun violence than anywhere. You f— c— are pathetic excuse for civil servants. Hell, n—love shooting themselves with GATS, isnt that what your people call it. What you have done here is creater criminals out of law abiding citizens, and put yourself out of a job. You politicians have no idea what you are even doing anyway, do you know how long it takes someone to change a magazine, less than a second, so what if someone with expereince decides to flip out and bring their gun in with 5 or so 10 round magazines, they can do the same amount of damage. Limiting magazine sizes is stupidity, and will not work. I for one have 100+ 30 round mags and 150 round drums. I will never give those up, and I am far from being some whack job. What I am is pissed off at c— n— who know nothing about what they are doing and knee jerk react rather than look for a solution to fix the problem and enforce existing laws. We will all work very hard to ensure there is no job for you 2014. We will make it our mission to ensure each Democrat who supports this law is also out of a job.

Wow… Just wow. You said it.

Do you think Sain might have just been on a drunk or something? We don’t think so. Look at the date- and timestamps of the emails — he would had to have been on a drunk from ten in the morning on a Wednesday until after five the following Friday afternoon.

What does Sain have to say? According to the arrest affidavit, two Denver police detectives showed up at Softec Solutions and questioned Sain (paragraph breaks added for clarity):

Your Affiant[2] told Sain that he (Det. Takamato) was following up on a case. Your Affiant asked Sain if he was familiar with Colorado House Representative Fields, and Sain stated, “I am”. Your Affiant asked Sain if he called her, and Sain stated, “I did call her. I guess probably out of anger more than anything. But I didn’t threaten her or anything.”

Your Affiant asked Sain if he sent her (Representative Fields) emails. Sain stated he had to think. Sain stated, “I sent a lot of emails over the weekend to congress, but I usually attach my name to these things.”

Your Affiant asked Sain if he used the name Coffee Country Boy, and Sain stated no. (Your Affiant inadvertently stated Coffee Country Boy, however, a subsequent review of the interview, [sic] Your Affiant realized that he had intended to ask Sain if he used the name Coffee County Boy.)

Sain stated that he could not remember who he had sent emails to, expressing that he felt it was a dumb law, Sain stated that he used their (congress’s) website to send email messages, and they were not sent from his own email account.

Your Affiant stated to Sain that Ms Fields received six emails using language of…(paused while looking at notes). Sain stated, “I used a term I probably shouldn’t have. I will send her or call her and apologize.” Your Affiant asked Sain what word he used that he shouldn’t have, and Sain stated that he called her a “c—” on the phone.

Sain stated that he has two or three email addresses at home and he would have to look to see what they are. Sain stated that he never sends the emails from work. Sain stated that when he got home, he would check his email address and call Your Affiant to let him know what the email addresses were.

Sain told Your Affiant that he only called Ms. Fields once, and it was from his cell phone 719-440-—, Sain stated that he made the call on 02/18/13 at 5:33 p.m. Franklin Sain advised that his home address is — in Colorado Springs.

Later, states the affidavit, Sain called the detective as promised, and left a voicemail:

Franklin Sain stated that he does use the email address coffeecountyboy@hotmail.com. Franklin Sain stated that he did send Representative Fields emails from the account and he did call her. Sain stated that the last email that he sent to Representative Fields was on Friday (2/15/13). Sain stated, “I did not make any threats in my emails. I know emails are traceable and I wouldn’t have done that…. I’m just voicing some frustrations about a topic I consider sacred, especially after wearing a uniform and fighting for this country. When you have media pushing blame on gun owners, that just brings my emotions out.”

The detective returned Sain’s call:

Franklin Sain repeatedly apologized and stated, “That’s just not me. I’m a professional and I don’t talk or act like that.”

Yet, according to the affidavit, Sain admitted sending “five to eight emails” to Rep. Fields from the email address in question, which he said no one else used. Nevertheless:

Sain stated, “I don’t use words like that. … c— and other racist names. I don’t use that word when I talk. I’m not a racist. Those emails are not who I am.”

And then, on February 21st (two days after the phone exchange between the detective and Sain), an intern working for Rep. Fields reported receiving a letter postmarked February 16th:

Rhonda Fields
N— C—
Mother of
Death to Both

All N— Back to Africa
F— you
F— Your Laws
I Keep my 30 Round Magazines
There Will Be Blood!
I’m Coming For You, N— B—

Wisely, Rep. Fields canceled a town hall meeting she had scheduled that night.

What makes the letter even worse — as if these attacks could possibly get any worse — is the threat to Fields’s daughter. You see…

Rhonda is a longtime resident of Aurora, Colorado, where she also raised her two children, Maisha and Javad, in local public schools. Both children graduated from Colorado State University. …

On the night of June 20, 2005 — both Javad and his fiancee Vivian Wolfe were shot and killed at an intersection in Aurora. The very next day, Rhonda’s son Javad Fields, who had just graduated from Colorado State University, was expected to be a key witness in the murder trial of his friend Gregory Vann.

Through Rhonda’s tireless advocacy, three men were arrested, charged and convicted eight months after the murders of Javad and Vivian. Although justice was served, Rhonda felt that no one with the courage to be a prosecution witness should have to give up his or her life to help put criminals behind bars. This tragedy led her to work with legislators at the Colorado State House of Representatives where she fought to improve public safety and our criminal justice system. Through State Representative Garcia and State Senator Nancy Spence, she introduced House Bill 1379, which was designed to help ensure the safety of witnesses. The bill was passed and named the Javad Marshall Fields & Vivian Wolfe Witness Protection Act.

It is in memory of her son’s courage, confidence and heroism that Rhonda founded the Fields Wolfe Memorial Fund, a nonprofit organization designed exclusively to promote academic excellence, civic engagement and community service. She established an endowed scholarship in October of 2005 for incoming freshmen attending Colorado State University and has raised $350,000 in five years to support academic scholarships. Yearly scholarships are awarded to qualified students that meet eligibility criteria managed by CSU staff. Students are granted $5,000 annually throughout their studies at CSU. She is proud to report that two of her recipients have graduated, which gives testament to the impact these scholarships are making on empowering youth in Colorado. …

Wow. Yeah.

So, what else do you know about Frank Sain? Well, he’s married, and we think his wife (who sometimes uses his surname and sometimes doesn’t) works for a nonprofit. They own a nice house in a nice suburb of Colorado Springs. His grandfather was just a good ol’ boy from Tennessee… whose obituary lends some insight into Frank Sain’s choice of an email alias: “[Roy Sain] had a love for quail hunting and baseball. He also enjoyed visiting at Brad’s Automotive Shop to catch up on all the latest events. Most recently, he was a member of the Coffee County Senior Center where he enjoyed playing Rook and visiting. He attended Lumley Stand Church of Christ. He will be forever remembered as a loving family man who was very devoted to his wife, children and extended family. Roy especially loved his grandchildren.”

Read a news blurb yesterday that Sain’s employer, Softec Solution, is a minority owned company that does not support Sain’s blatant bigotry…and stated Sain has been terminated.

  • Sooz says:

    Softec’s statement made on https://www.facebook.com/softecinc

    • ConBab says:

The denizens of FB are really going to town on Softec re suspending him rather than firing him outright. We have to agree with most of the commenters — but perhaps there’s nothing else Softec can do (without risking a lawsuit) until the allegations are proven true.

Meanwhile, if we worked at Softec, we’d be demanding the world’s best security system, with bulletproof glass all around.

We’ll definitely have to follow up on this soon — now Sain’s lawyer is claiming Sain’s free speech is being trampled.
