Claims to fame: Former Mayor of New York; narcissist; adulterer; bad Catholic
Moral apex: Tried to beat wife Donna Hanover to the punch by filing for divorce first, charging her with cruelty. She turned around and charged him with “open and notorious adultery,” referring to his very-public affair with main squeeze Judith Nathan. This was aside from an earlier affair Hanover said Rudy had with a female staffer.
What’s worse: Rudy brought Nathan home to the Gracie Mansion — while Donna was still in residence.
When the smoke cleared: Donna ended up with the kids, a massive cash settlement ($6.8 million), and around $20K a month in alimony and child support.
Twist of fate: Rudy, already an unpopular mayor further shamed by a dirty-laundry airing, was snatched from the jaws of disgrace by masterful handling of September 11th attacks.
What happened to his mistress: He married her. In church. And she wore white.
“[I]n April 1999, in the sixth year of his term-limited mayoralty, Giuliani had only a 40 percent approval rating from the people he governed, who knew him best. A year later his divorce lawyer was savagely attacking his wife, Donna Hanover, while the Mayor was flaunting his mistress in public. He even brought his girlfriend into the Mayor’s residence, Gracie Mansion, while his wife was still residing there. They don’t allow this kind of behavior in trailer parks!”— Democratic Party of Orange County, Florida
Suggested Bible reading for Mr. Giuliani:
In the multitude of people is the king’s honour: but in the want of people is the destruction of the prince.
