“Christians are taught — and many believe — that thanks to the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit they are a moral beacon for society. The writer of Matthew told his audience, ‘You are the light of the world.’ That’s a high bar, and yet decent believers (along with many other decent people) try earnestly to meet it. But the added pressure on those who call themselves the ‘righteous’ means that believers also are prone to hiding, pretending, posing, and turning a blind eye to their own very human, very normal faults and flaws.
“People who desperately want to be sanctified and righteous, ‘cleansed by the blood of the lamb’ — who need to believe that they now merit heaven but that other people’s smallest transgressions merit eternal torture — have a lot of motivation to engage in (more…)
Missouri has always been something of an anomaly among the states. Officially part of the Midwest, Missouri looks, feels, and often acts far more like its Southern neighbors (particularly Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee). Offhand…
A city like Columbia actually feels like a city, but drive a few miles out of town, and suddenly you’re in dark woods of the sort that will make you think you’ve just been dropped into the middle of a Friday the 13th sequel, where you’ll remember every reference Stephen King ever made to “foo lights,” before you stop mid-thought and suddenly recognize the tune you’ve been humming mindlessly to yourself. “Michelle Malkin, ranked by the Internet search company PeekYou as having the most traffic of any political blogger, routinely dismisses [liberals] as ‘moonbats, morons and idiots.’ Limbaugh infamously dispatched a young woman who expressed her opinion that the government should provide free birth control as a ‘slut’ and a ‘prostitute.’ …
“In this historic moment for human rights, listening to the likes of [Roger] Ailes (now on his third marriage) and [Rush] Limbaugh (currently married to wife No. 4), not to mention [Karl] Rove (divorced twice), it is impossible to believe that Republicans screaming about the future of wedlock are sincere. If they are truly worried about marriage, they should stop harassing gays and campaign for the only change that might make a real difference. (more…)
“This week, in light of the President’s trip down the birth canal of acceptance on gay marriage, I thought I first would investigate the heartbreak of those traditionally wed, heterosexual couples whose unions have crumbled under the pressure of living in states or countries where same sex marriage is permitted.
“Can’t find a damn one…let me know if you hear of any, I’m always open to sources. (more…)
We’d believe The National Enquirer before we’d believe him. After all, the Enquirer was right about John Edwards…
Hypocrite of the Week: Rush Limbaugh — which seems kind of understated, considering everything else Limpbo has said and done since his “slut” attack on Sandra Fluke, which we haven’t even bothered addressing, and probably won’t, until the last advertiser pulls out (and even Goldline will refuse to be associated with him), and the big, bloviating, bigoted blowhard finally sinks under the weight of his own vitriol into complete, total, and well-deserved oblivion (and poverty, we can only hope). Nevertheless, we are compelled to mention a shot of reality Limpbo got right between his beady little eyes this week, when he attacked the wrong people… (more…)
Claims to fame: Professional blowhard; anal-cyst-infected draft dodger; pill freak, divorcé; massive hypocrite; jerk
Moral apex: He reaches a new moral apex (which, in Conservative Babylon speak, is a euphemism for nadir) nearly every day. So let’s list just a few of the 8,947,284,392,281 things we hate about Rush Limbaugh, starting with the reason he qualifies for a spot in Conservative Babylon: his mindboggling hypocrisy on matters of sex (and, perhaps, love — although it’s very doubtful Rush is capable of comprehending the concept of love, save for self-love).
