Fun factoid: Long rumored to have fathered a child out of wedlock. A black child — which wouldn’t make a bit of difference, were Thurmond not a segregationist.
Fun fact: The rumor was true. Her name is Essie Mae Washington, who, at age 78, came out of the closet only after Thurmond died in 2003, explaining: “I was sensitive about his well-being, his career and his family. I never wanted to do anything to harm him. But my children deserved to know where they came from.”
