“What bothers me the most about ‘The Expendables 2′ was the producers’ apparent willingness to acquiesce to Norris’ demand that the movie’s language needed to be toned down or he wouldn’t participate in the film… Norris, who has written several Christian-themed books and is a voice of the National Council on Bible Curriculum in Public Schools, isn’t OK with swearing being in a film but is perfectly fine with killing dozens of nameless bad guys with a gigantic automatic weapon, leaving nothing but a trail of blood and body parts in his wake. Seems unthinkable, doesn’t it? Typical of the AFA’s staunch protests against that most cherished value of separation of church and state is this rant from current AFA spokesmodel Bryan Fischer (you know, the one who thinks children being raised by gay parents should be kidnapped in order to “save” them): (more…)
“Typical of other morality crusaders, [Charles Keating] was morally bankrupt. He is nationally known not because of his views on pornography, but his 1992 conviction for swindling small investors of their money, in the collapse of Lincoln Savings and Loan. Keating received inappropriate loans, received compensation he was not rightfully entitled to, sold stock back to the company at inflated prices, spent company money on himself in inappropriate ways, and generally (more…)
“One of the many peculiarities is that millions of fundamentalist Christians consider themselves especially patriotic Americans, though in reality it is quite impossible to reconcile the views of the Founding Fathers with those of the Bible on a number of important questions.
“To give only a few examples:
“1. The Bible implies in many places the union of church and state, whereas the American system is based on the separation of church and state.
“2. The Bible generally teaches that civil power comes from God, whereas the Constitution asserts that it derives from the consent of the governed. (more…)

“I agree with 3000 years of recorded history. I believe marriage is a sacred institution between a man and a woman and I have been rock solid in my support of traditional marriage. Marriage is first and foremost about nurturing and developing children. It’s unfortunate that those who choose to defend the institution of marriage are often demonized.” – 12/14/06 National Review Online

Regarding “’healing’ pastors purportedly treating all kinds of affliction,” with claims of “curing HIV, cancer and other chronic illnesses using various combinations of prayer and exorcism”:
“… There are government departments responsible for vetting and approving medicines and medical procedures, as well as medical practitioners. They determine who may practise what sort of medicine, the sort of training required, and what substances may be administered as medications or treatments. …
“A person with HIV/Aids goes to ‘Bishop’ so and so for prayers after ‘witnessing’ his healing abilities on national TV, complete with a parade of emaciated ‘end-stage HIV patients’ who get healed through prayer and exorcism. He goes for these prayers and subsequently stops taking his medications or attending his usual clinic. His condition deteriorates and he dies within a few months. (more…)
“After the shooting of a Family Research Council security guard, social conservatives wasted no time in issuing blame. … The addition of the FRC to the [Southern Poverty Law Center's] hate group list is why social conservatives are saying that the recent shooting occurred.
“The obvious problem here this: if the SPLC merely putting the FRC (and other similar organizations) on a hate group list and pointing out the organization’s homophobic track-record is enough to induce this shooting, then what about the things that social conservative groups have said about and against gay people? … I submit to you that if the SPLC is culpable for what happened at the FRC, then the following persons and organizations, (more…)
“Christians are not supposed to take their disputes before non-Christian courts or judges. (‘If any of you has a dispute with another, dare he take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the saints?’ — 1 Corinthians 6:1 NIV) How interesting! Considering that state is separate from church all courts are supposedly ‘ungodly’. Does this stop Christians from tying up the supreme court with law suits concerning school prayer, abortion, or numerous other absurdities? Hell no it doesn’t, and my taxes are paying the

“Pat Robertson, the Baptist televangelist, who readers may remember for blaming 9/11 on secularists, has come out with an equally inventive explanation for the Wisconsin atrocity. The culprits, he speculated, were ‘people who are atheists; they hate God, they hate the expression of God, and they are angry with the world, angry with themselves, angry with society, and they take it out on innocent people who are worshipping God.’ (more…)

“The pesky evangelical belief that the only way that kids will get the idea to have sex is if adults tell them about it was, to put it lightly, not working out so well, as The Daily Beast‘s David Sessions points out. States with high concentrations of evangelicals have correspondingly high concentrations of telltale side effects of evangelical beliefs on public health — unplanned pregnancies, abortions, and STD’s.
“That’s because very few young evangelicals actually practice what they preach; 80% of them will have premarital sex, and of those who have premarital sex, many will get pregnant since birth control pills aren’t something you learn about in Don’t Touch Yourself Or Each Other Or You’ll Go To Hell Class. And what happens to those evangelical pregnancies? 30% of them result in abortions. (more…)
