Remember this guy? Slick-as-snot Orange County Republican Tan Nguyen twice tried and failed to throw Democrat Loretta Sanchez out of her 47th District seat in California, the second time resorting to seriously sleazy tactics: In an attempt to intimidate voters who, he figured, weren’t likely to vote for him (mostly Democratic Latinos), he sent a letter, in Spanish, to 14,000 voters with Hispanic-sounding surnames, trying to convince them that immigrants (even legal ones — and never mind that Nguyen himself is an immigrant) aren’t allowed to vote, and if they tried, they’d be in big trouble. Nguyen also lied about the letter… and about a bunch of other things, too. He was finally found guilty of obstruction of justice (a felony) and sent to the jug for a year and a day — and has been fighting his conviction ever since. (more…)

Moral apex #1: In 2006, Nguyen’s campaign mailed 14,000 letters, the goal of which appeared (to us, and to just about everybody else, except Tan) to be intimidation and suppression of Latino voters.
