Acker; with sexually molesting at least 21 girls throughout his 25-year teaching career. Charged: Amanda Arnwine, 29, Cub Scout leader / den mother and mother of two, of Athens, Tennessee, with sexual battery by an authority figure after inappropriately touching a 16-year-old Boy Scout (”working with her on a project”) after drinking “a beer.” Reports WTVC: “Athens police tell us Arnwine has a lengthy criminal history. We’re told she has been charged with three D.U.I.’s, along with public intoxication, and drugs in Hamilton County over the past few years.” Which makes us wonder how in the world the BSA could have possibly overlooked her rap sheet. David Kent Pierce • Russell Louis Rodman • Scott Keith Voss • Milton Wells
Sentenced: Tedd Butler, 46, former pastor, Gospel Light Baptist Church, Walker, Michigan, to one year in jail, to run concurrently with the one-year sentence he is already serving, for two different cases involving the sexual abuse of small boys. In the first, when Butler was a 19-year-old youth minister at the now-closed Landmark Baptist Church, Algoma Township, Michigan, he “admitted to sexually molesting a boy 50 to 60 times between January 1984 and the end of 1992,” when the boy was between three and nine years old. In the second, more recent case, he touched a five-year-old boy inappropriately in his own home. Story: MLive.com, August 25, 2011; WOOD, January 31, 2012; WWMT, January 31, 2012 (more…)

Remember this guy? This is Arthur Burton Schirmer, former pastor of Reeders United Methodist Church in Reeders, Pennsylvania. In 2010, he was charged with murdering his second wife, Betty Jean Schirmer, in a staged car wreck in 2008. The cops thought things looked fishy (especially since the car was going only something like 25mph when the “accident” “killed” Betty Jean), but they couldn’t quite put their collective finger on the problem — or on Schirmer — until the husband of the woman Schirmer was having an affair with killed himself inside Schirmer’s church, and— (more…)

Claims to fame: Pastor, Jonesboro Worship Center, Jonesboro, Arkansas; founder, Leadership Dynamics; braggart (per blog:”Holder of 1 Guiness Book of World Records Record”); bank fraud; tax cheat; jailbird

Died: Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua, 88, retired Roman Catholic cardinal who ruled the Philadelphia archdiocese, on January 31, 2012. His death brings to a close the question of whether or not he was competent (the church claimed dementia fogged Bevilacqua’s memory) to testify in an upcoming trial regarding his handling — or rather mishandling and strongly-suspected cover-ups — of three suspected child-abusing priests and a lay teacher once under his command (although Bevilacqua was long suspected of covering up many other sex-abuse cases within the dicoese). Of course, Bevilacqua preferred to blame the long “tradition” of child sex-abuse within the Catholic church — and the long tradition of transferring pervert pedophile priests from one dicoese to another instead of dealing with the abuse head-on — on (you guessed it) homosexuality. Imagine that. (more…)
Rick Bartlett • Darrell Lewis Gilyard • Christopher Iruke • Shawn Anthony Justice
Rick Rogers • Jae-Kap Song • Timothy Dane Tillman
Arrested and charged: Rick Bartlett, 55, pastor, Bastrop Christian Church, Bastrop County, Texas, with animal cruelty after allegedly killing a family cat by throwing him off a 50-foot bridge. Bartlett, known for trapping feral cats, reportedly captured the 12-year-old tabby, Moody — who wore identification tags — then threw the cat in a cage on the back of his truck and “forgot” about him for three days. Then, Bartlett claims, he found Moody missing. (more…)

Claims to fame: Former pastor, New Life Church of Restoration (now called Crossroads House of Prayer), near Gatesville, Texas; murder suspect
Moral apex: Considering that he hasn’t been convicted of murder, we’d have to say it’s getting remarried less than a year after his previous wife’s charred corpse stopped smoldering. Hardly illegal, but pretty insensitive (especially to his kids), tasteless, and, well, suspicious. (more…)

Energy Publisher brought this sick little phenomenon to our attention with the headline, “Florida: Evangelical pastors arrested on child sex charges: Four arrests of Christian pastors in one week on charges of sexual abuse of minors.”
The suspected perps:
Darryl Leonard Taylor, Jr., 25, youth minister, Born Again Church of God in Christ, Auburndale, facing a total of 13 counts of lewd acts and lewd battery committed against a boy between 12 and 15 years old. Story: 13 News, December 13, 2011

Boy, this is one we’ve been waiting for: the conviction of Sacramento-area gay-bashing senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Rio Linda, Tommy Gene Daniels.
The good news: He was convicted in December of 11 of 12 counts against him for sexually molesting five girls between five and eight years old. All were reportedly molested at Daniels’s home; the APB reports that one “had been going to the residence for day care. The other four were foster children placed there by adoptive parents who found them too difficult to handle.”
Daniels’s wife — who told of the abuse by one of the girls and did nothing — said all the girls were liars.
The bad news: Sentencing — which could land Daniels as much as 165 years — was delayed in January after his lawyer motioned for a new trial.
Stay tuned.

I used to be the only one who did this. Now I’m not, and now, there are many, many people who do it better.
I’m not in competition with anyone, but I have to consider, seriously, whether I can do it well at all.
For me, it was never a race to see who could get the most shocking news about right-wingers up first — it was about dig-down-deep research, and presenting the most comprehensive, easily-digestible view out there, by which I mean: major snark softening the most horrible stories so that you could read them without throwing up, in order to make a point, that point being: the people who want to control and restrict your very life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness, are the biggest hypocrites of all.
But in the eight years I’ve been doing this (and it has been eight years — where has the time gone?), a lot of other people have taken up the mantle and have been doing the same thing.
I want to say that I don’t harbor any resentment (although, truth be told, I think I do)… that, as I have been telling myself for the better part of a decade: it’s not who gets the credit — it’s that these stories get out there, in order to make the public aware, because we’re all on the same side… right?
